"A humiliating climb down for Wycombe District Council" is how Andrew Lomas, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate in Wycombe, has described the recent capping of rent increases for council tenants in the town.
Lomas, a 25 year old scientist from Oxford, selected to fight the seat in February, said:
"It takes a peculiar amount of mismanagement of the housing stock to force central government to step in and limit the rent increase. At a time when the economic outlook is creating insecurity, the last thing tenants need is the further worry that a bigger rent bill will create."
The government bail-out, which will limit the rent-increase to 3% comes against a back-ground of increasing rent arrears. Lomas added;
"If people are finding it hard to make the rent, then they need to be able to get access to high quality advice in order to assess their entitlement to help. A hike of 6% helps nobody. My advice to the leadership of Wycombe District Council is that they should get their own house in order or make way for councillors who can do the job properly."
